Sigma Alpha Iota was founded as an honorary music organization for women. The founders envisioned an organization that would both actively promote music and support the achievements of women in music. The founders “solemnly pledged themselves to help each other with sisterly affection, to stand for the highest musical scholarship, for nobility and uprightness of character and for the maintenance of friendly and unselfish relations among women in the musical profession.”

Sigma Alpha Iota stresses high academic achievement and believes that its activities should never interfere with academic work. Absences for academic reasons or musical performances and related rehearsals are always excused. Our commitment to academic excellence is reflected in our requirement that a woman have a grade point average of 2.7 in order to become a member and to continue active membership.

Sigma Alpha Iota denounces hazing as unnecessary, dangerous and destructive behavior and its members take all possible measures to eliminate hazing from the pledging process. Sigma Alpha Iota is in no way associated with activities involving alcohol or any illegal substances. Chapter funds are never used to make such purchases.

The Sigma Chi chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota was chartered on December 1, 1926, making it the first Greek organization to establish a chapter at the University of Miami. The chapter has been present and active on campus for nearly 90 years!
